MASTS AND FLAGS OF THE SS GREAT BRITAIN
S.S. “Great Britain” was a passenger steamship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel for the Great Western Steamship Company’s service between Bristol, England and New York.

She was the first ship in the world to combine both an iron hull and a screw propeller. When launched in 1843, she was the largest ship afloat. However, her construction costs left her owners in a difficult financial position, and they went out of business in 1846 after the ship went aground.

Sold and subsequently repaired, “Great Britain” carried immigrants to Australia until she was converted to a sailing ship in 1881. In 1884, she was laid up in the Falkland Islands and was used as a floating warehouse, quarantine ship and coal bunker until she was scuttled in 1937.

In 1970, “Great Britain” was returned to the Bristol dry-dock where she was built and was restored. Now a fantastic museum, she is a great reminder of the Industrial Revolution of the 19th Century.
